You will begin by creating a map on 11x17 paper to plan out your model. It must be based off of the descriptions provided in the book. Once the plan has been approved by Mr. Ripkens, you may begin the construction of your model. If you are building a physical model, the dimensions can be no larger than 1m squared. Acceptable materials are: Lego, Salt Dough, Playdough/Plasticene. Other material suggestions may be acceptable, please see Mr. Ripkens. You may also construct a digital model using minecraft if you have a subscription to that program. Other software suggestions may be acceptable, please see Mr. Ripkens.
Option 2 - Character Comparison
Write a paper that compares the character Phillip from The Cay to Russel from Dogsong. Use the following questions as a guide:
1. How are the characters' personalities similar and/or different?
2. How are their situations similar and/or different?
3. How is their relationship with Timothy/Oogruk similar and/or different?
4. How is their problem similar and/or different?
5. How are their stories similar and/or different?
Written length should be approximately 400 - 1000 words.
Option 3 - Rewrite a Chapter
You may choose a chapter from The Cay and do a short-form rewrite of it that tells the story from the perspective of another character rather than Phillip. The written length will be dependent upon which chapter you choose. An example of this project would be: The sinking of the S.S. Hato as experienced by Timothy, rather than Phillip.
Option 4 - Linking Reading
Find another book written by the author of The Cay, Theodore Taylor and read it. Write a short 200-300 word summary of the book.
